Impact on student protagonism of the rescue of the identity of Julio Antonio Mella

Introduction: the current Cuban university faces a huge challenge in forging professionals with integrity and a social consciousness capable of transforming and contributing from the perspectives of the Cuban revolutionary process.
Objective: to evaluate the impact of recovering the identity of Julio Antonio Mella, the founder of the University Student Federation, on the protagonism of student leaders.
Methods: a qualitative study was conducted at the Carlos J. Finlay University of Medical Sciences, using structured interviews, group interviews, and participant observation with a sample of eleven student leaders.
Results: the findings reveal that student leaders have a correct and enriched understanding of student protagonism due to the recovery of Mella's identity.
Conclusions: student leaders perceive that the recovery of Julio Antonio Mella's identity has been the formative start of a radical thinking within them.
