Abstract

Introduction: During the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Europeans migrated to the Americas in search of economic opportunities to improve their status.

Objective: To exemplify two moments that influenced the development of medicine in Cuba, related to the Health House of the Association of Commercial Clerks, today ´´Diez de Octubre´´ Clinical Surgical Hospital.

Methods: A literature review was made about the history of the Health House of the Association of Commercial Clerks.

Development: The Association of Commercial Clerks of Havana was established in Cerro neighborhood due to its environmental advantages, very beneficial for health, and the ostentation of the patrimony of a significant part of the most distinguished families of Havana society.

Conclusions: In the first decade of the 20th century, the development of medicine in Cuba was slowed down by the socio-economic and political situation of the country. However, there were isolated events that represented milestones in the history of medicine. Evidence of this are doctors like Moas and Fernández.
