Vicente Antonio de Castro: a precursor of cuban medina and an independence advocate leader

Introduction: Vicente Antonio de Castro is considered one of the most brilliant criollos of his time. He stood out for his genius, as well as for the purity of his convictions and ideals. He is a pride of science and Freemasonry in Cuba.
Objective: To characterize the figure of Vicente Antonio de Castro in his work as a physician, patriot and Freemason.
Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out using Google Scholar and SciELO, with the use of the terms Vicente Antonio de Castro, masonería [Freemasonry] and anestesiología [anesthesiology], together with their English language equivalents. For consultation and analysis, 15 sources were selected.
Development: Among his most relevant merits is the application of ethereal anesthesia for the first time in Cuba. He shared the separatist ideas of the time and participated in the Vuelta Abajo conspiracy. Faced with the contradictory situation of Freemasonry in Cuba, he created the Gran Oriente de Cuba y las Antillas, an organization that promoted the independence objectives.
Conclusions: De Castro was one of the most brilliant physicians of his time. He made a fundamental contribution to the 1968 Revolution and disseminated a political-social project to achieve an independent society.
