Fidel's legacy in the successes of Primary Health Care in Cuba

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Fidel Castro played a decisive role in the transformation of Cuban public health by promoting a public, universal, and free healthcare system, with emphasis on Primary Health Care (PHC) as a strategic axis.
Objective: To present the continuing relevance of Fidel's legacy in the successes of Primary Health Care in Cuba.
Methods: A qualitative bibliographic review study was conducted, employing theoretical methods of historical-logical, analytical-synthetic, and inductive-deductive analysis. Additionally, a literature review was carried out, selecting articles available in PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases related to the object of study of this research.
Author's position: The research showed that Fidel's ideas constitute an important foundation for the social conception of the Cuban healthcare system, which is oriented toward a preventive and community-based approach, the family doctor and nurse model, the mass training of human resources, and the implementation of programs aimed at vulnerable groups. This reveals a close coherence between Fidel's thought and the implemented health policies.
Conclusions: Fidel's legacy in the successes of Primary Health Care in Cuba remains fully relevant through the principles that underpin the social conception of health, based on solidarity and universal access to services, and oriented toward a preventive approach and community work. This constitutes a benchmark of humanism and solidarity for Cuba and the world.
