Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Humanism constitutes the set of ideas that express respect for human dignity and concern for the well-being of humanity. In Cuba, the highest expression of revolutionary humanism is found in the figure of Fidel Castro, who serves as a paradigm of the values that define and underpin the ideology of the Cuban Revolution.

Objective: To set forth the importance of humanism as a macro-value and principle of the biomedical sciences.

Methods: A literature review was conducted utilizing theoretical-level methods, specifically documentary analysis and systematization. Additionally, articles available in the PubMed and SciELO databases, as well as the Google Scholar search engine, were consulted. Thirteen bibliographic references were utilized to provide the theoretical foundation for the preparation of this scientific article.

Development: The ideology of the Cuban Revolution constitutes a system of ideas and values, a historical-cultural product of the nation, in which humanism stands out as a defining hallmark. The Cuban Revolution has deployed medical contingents in which solidarity and altruism have distinguished the fulfillment of complex internationalist missions.

Conclusions: Humanism is the macro-value and principle that guides the professional conduct of health professionals in Cuba, and which has left a recognized imprint upon the world through internationalist missions. These missions are guided by the revolutionary precepts of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, and represent a convergence of solidarity, altruism, and social commitment to the peoples of the world.
