ABSTRACT
Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia in intensive care units represents a clinical and ethical challenge that transcends the technical to involve social, historical, and philosophical dimensions.
Objective: To expose the importance of an interdisciplinary analysis of the competencies of health personnel in the prevention of nosocomial pneumonia.
Methods: For the preparation of this article, a review of the competencies of intensive care personnel in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia was carried out, following a systematic and rigorous process. An exhaustive search was carried out in recognized electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus and LILACS, from January to June 2025. In addition, historical-logical and synthetic-analysis methods were used.
Development: Historically, the professionalization of healthcare personnel and the institutionalization of intensive care units have been processes linked to the modernization of medicine and the consolidation of hospital systems that seek to control infectious risks.
Conclusion: The prevention in intensive care is not merely a set of clinical procedures, but a concrete expression of the values and principles that underpin comprehensive and humanized medicine, essential for patient protection and well-being. It reflects on how these competencies not only involve technical knowledge, but also values, responsibilities, and power dynamics that affect the quality of care and patient dignity.
