Florence Nightingale’s Contributions to Nursing Education and Humanistic Practice

Abstract

Introduction: By the light of her lamp, Florence Nightingale transformed nursing, humanized statistics, and opened up professional opportunities for women. From the Crimean War to the application of statistical methods in public health, she proved perseverance and resilience in the face of constant adversity.

Objective: To outline Florence Nightingale’s principal contributions to nursing education and humanistic practice.

Methods: A literature review was conducted, analyzing articles available in the PubMed and SciELO databases, as well as via the Google Scholar search engine; from these sources, 41 bibliographic references relevant to the study's subject matter were selected.

Results: The review highlighted the integration of ethical, environmental, educational, and statistical principles into the praxis of nursing care. Furthermore, Florence Nightingale’s contributions proved a decisive impact on the consolidation of modern nursing and the promotion of humanistic care, areas that underscore the resilience and perseverance of health professionals when confronting historical and structural challenges.

Conclusions: Florence Nightingale established a firm theoretical foundation for the nursing profession. The principles she established remain relevant in contemporary practice—effectively guiding health promotion, disease prevention, hospital hygiene, and patient care—and serve to reaffirm the importance of systematic observation, continuous education, and professional ethics as fundamental elements of humanized care.
